Montague Liquor Store | Montague, PE | Nine Yards Studio
The Project
Residents of the town of Montague, Prince Edward Island have made the five-minute drive out of town to the area liquor store for years. In late 2016, however, the P.E.I. Liquor Control Commission (PEILCC) announced that the store was moving to a more central location that would be larger and more accessible with a greater product selection.
Charlottetown-based architecture and design firm Nine Yards Studio was tasked with designing the 7500 square foot retail location in Montague. The design of this store was crucial, as it was the first store chosen for the re-brand of PEILCC. “The idea was to create a more shoppable retail experience which focused on providing a well organized, warm and inviting contemporary store,” explains Nine Yards Studio architect Shallyn Murray.
The Design
The new store, which officially opened its doors on July 1st, 2017, offers a holistic design and well thought out space planning to enhance the customer experience.
The synergy between all elements of the store design is Murrray’s favorite aspect of the project. With a natural yet contemporary aesthetic in mind, Murray and her team have mixed wood, black steel and concrete with energy efficient lighting, sleek displays and custom infographics and logos. The Icon Series floor tile, a natural concrete look, is simple and modern: a perfect complement to the carefully curated selection of materials used throughout the space.
Something New
The biggest change from the old store is the cooler design. Murray describes the cooler as “an extension of the retail space” rather than just a cold warehouse. Built-in elements and warm wood accents give the cooler area a more welcoming feel than what would traditionally be expected.
The new store, with its increased square footage and refrigerated space, has increased its product selection by 20 percent. A large BUY PEI section has been designed to encourage the purchase of local beer, wine and spirits.
More store traffic, more style and more local selection - what’s not to love?
